If you only buy one

IELTS 21 or The Official Cambridge Guide to IELTS?

IELTS 21 is four real Academic papers with answer keys and sample Writing answers, and almost no teaching. The Official Cambridge Guide teaches each question type first and then gives you eight practice tests, the first one guided. Start with the Guide to learn the test, then keep the IELTS 21 papers for timed runs near your test date.

How to use them with our free IELTS Academic practice

We have 27 IELTS Academic practice tests, one exam part at a time, and 2 full mock tests. You can finish 3 tests free, no account needed.

  1. Take a free full Reading test here first: 60 minutes, 40 questions. The question types where you drop the most marks are where to start in the Official Guide.
  2. Work through those chapters of the Guide, then take more full Reading tests here to see if the mistakes go.
  3. Write a Task 1 and a Task 2 answer here and get AI feedback on the four IELTS Writing criteria. If Lexical Resource is your lowest, add the vocabulary book.
  4. Keep the real papers in IELTS 21 for timed runs in the last weeks: 30 minutes for Listening, 60 for Reading and 60 for Writing.
  5. Between book papers, take a full mock here: Reading and Writing, timed, with one score at the end.

What these books leave out

None of these books can mark your own writing or hear you speak. Their sample answers show what a high band looks like, but not what band yours would get. Our AI writing feedback marks an IELTS Academic Task 1 or Task 2 answer on Task Achievement or Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. It is a practice band, not an official one. For Speaking you still need a partner or a teacher.
