The Teenager with a Dog-Walking Business

When Inês Carvalho was fifteen, she wanted to go on a summer language course in France. Her parents offered to pay for half of it, but they told her the rest was up to her. Inês had always loved animals, and she knew that many of her neighbours had dogs but worked long hours. She made some simple posters and put them up in local shops, offering to walk dogs after school for £5 an hour. However, he told all his friends about her, and by the end of the month she was walking six dogs.Running a business turned out to be harder than she had expected. She had to plan a careful timetable, and on some days she was out for three hours after school. She also had to keep a record of every walk and every payment in a notebook. Her parents were worried that her schoolwork would suffer. Two years later, Inês has eleven regular customers and a friend who helps her at weekends. She now charges £8 an hour, and several dog owners are on her waiting list. She has already paid for her course in France, and she has started saving for university. 'Find something you enjoy that other people don't have time to do,' she says. 'Then do it really well.'
