The shop that a village saved
A magazine article about villagers who bought and ran their local shop.
For almost a hundred years, the shop in Little Ashford sold everything from bread to birthday cards. So when the owners decided to retire two years ago and nobody wanted to buy the business, the people of the village were worried. The nearest supermarket was twelve kilometres away, and many older residents did not drive. At a meeting in the village hall, someone suggested that the villagers could buy the shop themselves. However, after a few weeks, more than two hundred people had each paid £50 to become part-owners.The next problem was finding people to work there. The village could only afford to pay one manager, so volunteers were needed for everything else. Some of them, like eighty-year-old Joan Willis, had never worked in a shop before. ‘I was terrified of the till at first,’ she says. ‘Now I can use it faster than the manager!’The new shop is a little different from the old one. As well as food and newspapers, it now has a small café in the corner. On Tuesday mornings, a nurse from the local doctor’s surgery also uses a back room to see patients, so people no longer have to travel to town for simple check-ups.Last month, the shop celebrated its first birthday with a party for the whole village. ‘The shop isn’t just somewhere to buy milk,’ says the manager, Raj Patel. ‘It’s the heart of the village.’
