Many language learners say that watching films is one of the most 1. ways to improve. Unlike textbooks, films show how people really speak, with all the 2., jokes and slang of everyday conversation. Teachers generally agree, but they warn that simply watching is not enough. Without some 3., learners can easily spend two hours understanding very little. One 4. approach is to watch the same short scene several times: first with subtitles in your own language, then with subtitles in the language you are learning, and 5. with no subtitles at all. Each time, you notice a little more. Many learners also find it 6. to write down useful expressions and practise saying them aloud. Choosing the right film matters, too. A fast action film full of shouting may be 7. for a learner, while a quiet drama with clear dialogue is often easier to follow. Above all, experts say, learners should pick films they would happily watch anyway. If you are bored, you will find it almost 8. to concentrate.
