Most weekends you’ll find me in one of three old quarries near my home, splitting slabs of grey stone with a small hammer. I’ve been hunting for fossils since I was ten, and I’m still amazed that I can hold something that was alive two hundred million years ago. It’s changed the way I look at everything: a garden wall or a stone church step isn’t just a wall or a step any more, it’s a page of history. Years ago, I found an unusual sea creature that turned out to be a species nobody had recorded in this region, and it’s now in a university museum with my name on the label. I’m less proud of the time I climbed a crumbling quarry face alone to reach a promising rock. I got away with it, but it was stupid, and I’d never do it now.
