Never Too Late to Play

Five adults describe taking up a musical instrument later in life

Gwendolyn Price, 68, cello

I’d never played anything until I retired from surgery, but one evening I heard a recording of Bach’s cello suites on the radio and simply sat in the car outside my house until it finished. I bought a cello the following week. The hardest part has been my hands. For forty years they did exactly what I asked of them, and now my fingers feel stiff and clumsy, especially in the mornings, which I find more frustrating than I can say. My teacher is very patient. People keep asking when I’ll give a concert, and I keep telling them I won’t. I play for an hour every evening, alone, with the door closed, and that’s all I want from it.
