Answer key: TOEFL iBT · Write for an Academic Discussion · AI in hospital decisions

For the teacher. There is no single right answer: check the points a good answer covers, then compare with the model answer.

A good answer

  • Gives a clear opinion on the professor's question.
  • Supports it with a reason or example of their own.
  • Responds to at least one classmate's point instead of repeating it.
  • At least 100 words.

Model answer

I agree with Kenji that hospitals should use AI, but I think its biggest benefit is one neither of my classmates mentioned: time. Doctors today spend a large part of every shift on paperwork, checking test results and writing notes. If software can handle routine tasks such as sorting scans by urgency or drafting reports, doctors will have more time to actually talk to their patients. Priya's point about biased data is important, but it is an argument for testing these systems carefully on different groups of patients, not for rejecting them. Her second concern actually supports my view, because understanding a patient's wishes requires conversation, and AI could give doctors the time to have those conversations.
