Answer key: B2 First · Part 1: Multiple-choice cloze · Rooftop beekeeping in cities

For the teacher. Each answer comes with the reason it is right.

  1. 1. B: occur

'It never occurred to me that...' means the idea never came into my mind. 'Strike' takes a direct object ('it never struck you'), and 'happen' and 'arise' do not have this meaning.

  2. 2. D: grown

Something 'grows in popularity'. 'Raise', 'lift' and 'enlarge' need an object and do not collocate with 'in popularity'.

  3. 3. A: from

The verb 'benefit' is followed by 'from' when it means 'get an advantage from something'.

  4. 4. C: grow

Farmers 'grow' crops. 'Rear' and 'breed' are used for animals, and 'rise' cannot take an object.

  5. 5. D: point

'Point out that...' means draw attention to a fact. 'Put out', 'set out' and 'make out' have other meanings.

  6. 6. B: good

The fixed phrase is 'do more harm than good'.

  7. 7. C: number

'Hives' is a countable plural noun, so we use 'the number of'. 'Amount' is used with uncountable nouns, and 'sum' and 'total' are not used in this pattern.

  8. 8. A: lightly

'Not to be taken lightly' means it should be treated seriously. The other adverbs do not form this expression.
